Incident

At the last col before the peak we found we needed to abseil down a twelve foot drop. On getting the still plastic wrapped new lightweight rope out of my pack I dropped it and it fell about twenty feet down the crag. Unfortunately this meant we couldn't make the descent so had to back track and take a different route through armpit deep snow to recover the rope then return to base as it was by then too late to make the peak and return.

Lessons

Do not leave kit wrapped in plastic, it is slippery and adds unwrapping time when required.
Tie rope end into kit with a bit of tat when losing the rope could be disastrous.
