Trad rock climbing

Standing at the bottom gearing up

No injury

Incident

We were standing close to the start of the route, as another party topped out. There was a shout from above and a toaster sized lump landed a few feet away from my partner. Wearing a helmet would have made zero difference if it had hit.

Lessons

Very simple - stand away from the base of the route, especially when someone is climbing above. We all know to do this, but often don't.

Causes

Falling rock, snow, ice or object
