Incident

I was climbing to the right when I heard a scream and saw the leader falling about 8m then inverting as his leg caught the rope. He hit the wall hard and out of control.A fraction of time later a large “dinner” plate size of tock hit the ground. Narrowly missing several tourists.
We went to check the climber and he had twisted his back possibly broken ribs. He said he was pulling the rope up to clip when “the hold just exploded off the wall”

Lessons

Belayer was wearing a helmet.
The rock was large enough to cause life threatening injuries.
Maybe some signs should be put up warning tourists of the dangers of standing under climbers.
Maybe the belayer could have told his leader to wait while he asked the tourists to move away from potential danger area or at least warn them of the hazards.
