Incident

A climber pulled off a large block whilst climbing a conglomerate sport route, several people were stood below the route and it missed one of them by around 1 meter. The block would likely have caused death or serious injury.

Lessons

The conglomerate rock at Moy is unstable and will be pulled off even on established routes, this is particularly noticeable in the top sections of the crag where the conglomerate clasts are larger and less well travelled. Helmets are mandatory at all times at the crag. When possible, it is better to belay out of the firing line of loose rock. Be conscious when moving around the crag of climbers above and stay out of the way of potential falling rock. Similarly when climbing, be conscious of rock quality and people below, give as much warning as possible with a clear shout if you might pull a rock off. Repeat: Helmets are mandatory at all times at the crag.
