Incident
I was setting off on the climb and got only a foot or two off the ground when realised I couldn’t carry on. The climb was too technically demanding for me and couldn’t down climb. I fell off the rock awkwardly, cutting my finger badly as a tried to grab on to it (I tried to grab as was scared I would deck out as so close to the ground!). I almost needed stitches and got a pretty bad flapper too.
Lessons
I think I should have jumped away from the rock and accepted the fall rather than cling on (still not 100% as I was close to the ground). Take a first aid kit with you as I was bleeding everywhere and if it had been a multi pitch I would have struggled to keep climbing. The rock at Roche is very sharp.
