18/10/2022 | Sun God | Near miss. The 2nd quickdraw had been clipped as normal. While moving further up the climb I pressed the side of my body on the same face that the quickdraw was on. At some point, through my harness/body pressing on the quickdraw the dogbone unclipped from the bolt-end carabiner. This was not noticed until I was higher up towards the 3rd quickdraw. I was already finding the climb difficult (I'd like to blame this on the damp rock!) and was close to falling. Luckily I was able to scramble my way through another move to reach and clip the next bolt; at the time I felt that I had more chance of doing this than safely downclimbing. I clipped the bolt and hung onto the quickdraw, then quickly clipped my rope through it. Had I slipped, it would likely have been a ground fall. |
